Derek Scurll (drums & percussion) started playing orchestral percussion aged 11, after musical beginnings on the piano, violin and cello. He graduated with a degree in music at Selwyn College, Cambridge specialising in stylistic composition and fugue. He has studied composition with Robin Holloway and Adam Gorb amongst others. Subsequently he studied drums at the Royal Academy of music and with Bob Armstrong.

Derek's drumming covers a range of musical bases including orchestral percurssion, rock, jazz, funk, salsa and folk. He is in demand not only as a player but also as a versatile arranger of music in a variety of styles and as a teacher.

He has been playing timbales with Cambiando since 2002, and drums with Stryngs since 2004. He also performs with the Cambridge Philharmonic and in modern jazz sessions at the Elm Tree.
